HypeBeast

What Is A Hypebeast? 5 Important Aspects of the Hypebeast Lifestyle

By MEHAK ANWARJul 14, 2015

In the interest of staying up-to-date with popular culture, I often encourage myself to learn new, hip words that are being used by the cooler members of society so that I can pretend like I fit in. This week, I stumbled upon the word “hypebeast,” which left me asking the same question I’m sure many of you are curious about, as well: What is a hypebeast, exactly? I did a little digging to get to the bottom of the slang term; here’s what I found out.

First, let’s turn to Urban Dictionary for some original definitions. A hypebeast or hype beast may be defined as follows:

  1. “A person who follows a trend to be cool or in style. A person who wears what is hyped up.”
  2. “A Hype Beast [sic] is a kid that collect[s] clothing, shoes, and accessories for the sole purpose of impressing others. Although the individual may not have a dime to their name, they like to front like they are making far more then everybody else. Equipped with mommies [sic] credit card, the Hype Beast [sic] will try his hardest to make sure he has every pair of Nike’s [sic] he saw Jay-Z wearing on 106 & Park.”

There seem to be some conflicting definitions about the nuances of “hypebeast.” Most people agree that a hypebeast is particularly interested in doing what’s in vogue in order to impress other people, like buying cool, new shoes, snapbacks, or sweatshirts. Some people argue that a hypebeast usually uses other people’s money, typically belonging to their parents, older siblings, and so on; otherwise, meanwhile, claim that a hypebeast has an abundance of cash flow of their own that allows them to purchase such luxuries. It seems that poplar brands worn by hypebeasts include Stussy, Crooks and Castles, Supreme, Huf, Vans, and Alife.Giphy

So what does the hypebeast life look like? The Instagram account @hypebeast gives us some insight into the hypebeast lifestyle and aesthetic. According to the images featured on the page, a lot of hypebeast fashion is white or black with pops of bright colors like red, teal, or orange. Hypebeasts, it seems, are also into chic cars, guns, and gadgets.

2000 Fashion

Tank Tops Over Another Shirt

If you owned a lace cami in 2004, you were probably layering it over a t-shirt or another shirt like Alyson Michalka’s. It was a relatively easy look, achievable with any colored camisoles (I had a rainbow of colors that I wore under my one zip up). These days, the cami style is still around, though now I opt for silk or satin pieces.

Livestrong Bracelets

One way to rep your favorite causes in 2004 was wearing a one-size-fits-all silicon bracelet from the organization. (You’ll recognize the ubiquitous yellow Livestrong ones). Both the athlete for which the bracelet was named after and its other silicon cause bracelets have fallen from popularity as time passed. It’s no longer cool to simply rep a cause just for the sake of looking fashion.

Low-Rise Jeans

Low-rise jeans are predicted to make a comeback in 2020 after designer Kirk Millar of Linder NYC included the style in his spring collection and Levi’s (the OG of denim brands) announced its releasing low risers in 2019. If you’re tired of high-waisted fits digging into your skin, you might just be inclined to give low-risers another chance. Though personally, I shall pass.

Micro Denim Skirts

The only thing that would make this outfit look more 2003 is if Nicole Ritchie wore UGGs with her micro denim skirt. (Notice the cami layered underneath her sweater too.) As we’ve moved away from the super short denim miniskirts (long ones are in this season), we can take comfort in the fact we avoided any underwear wardrobe malfunctions.

Boho Vibes

Maybe you weren’t the name plate belt type, maybe you loved these boho-meets-western coin belts instead. You wore them low on the hips with jeans or flowy maxi skirts. This was definitely a cool look back then, since even Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen wore them in 2002.

90’s Fashion

A classic leather jacket was a must-have in the ’90s.

Drew Barrymore, circa 1990.

Leather jackets weren’t a style that originated in the ’90s, but, as Byrd explained, “The story of fashion is also the story of revising design” — everything makes a comeback.

“From the very beginning of time, there’s only been so many ways people can approach how to put together fabric into something that goes on the body,” Byrd said. “You’ll see the revisiting of past designs and familiar silhouettes throughout the history of fashion.”

Acid-wash jeans were a new way of wearing denim at the time.

Acid-wash jeans may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but they were certainly a fashion statement. The style has been spotted on runways in 2019, as pointed out by Who What Wear.

Polka-dot shirts were big in the ’90s.

Jerry Seinfeld in 1991

Jerry Seinfeld’s style, showcased in the sitcom “Seinfeld,” became iconic for the decade.

Wearing a plain t-shirt under a blazer was another go-to look in the ’90s.

Neon colors and athletic wear were often a fun, fashion-forward combination during the decade.

The Spice Girls in 1997

Though these exact styles from The Spice Girls may not be on-trend today, athleisure has made a major resurgence, proving that fashion constantly revisits itself.
